Bio:
Phoebe Malkin was born and raised in and around the bayous of New Orleans until she was eight, and her father revealed that he was a mutant. Cassandra Newton, formerly Cassandra Malkin, divorced her husband and took Phoebe up north to New York to raise. While in New York, Cassandra fell into denial; she disappeared for hours on end, often coming home in the middle of the night, falling over drunk. This forced Phoebe to grow up quickly, and often put a strain on her schoolwork and social life.
Jamie, a loving father, sent birthday gifts and frequent letters written in a code only he and Phoebe knew to his daughter until her thirteenth birthday, when the letters stopped. Having felt rejection by his human wife, Jamie had joined Magneto’s Brotherhood, robbing seven banks at once to become noticed by the metal manipulator. But, as time in the Brotherhood wore on, Jamie realized that Magneto’s quest for power wouldn’t stop, even if the human population were completely wiped out. So, when he was left behind to play decoy, he sold Magneto and spent half a year in prison.
Meanwhile, Phoebe grew up alone with her mother, practicing her power to control fire in secret, and waited for the day she turned eighteen. Her mother, however, finally overcame her denial and remarried. She was six months pregnant with Phoebe’s little stepbrother when she found out her daughter was a mutant. Infuriated, she locked Phoebe in her room for two weeks until she could find a place to take her where she would no longer be a bother to her and her new family. During a bridge game, Cassandra heard about Xavier’s and immediately dropped her frightened daughter off there with nothing more than a suitcase.
